Essay / Theme of Charity and the Man in the Well
In "A Visit of Charity", there were two main conflicts related to Marian being selfish. When Marian had to make this so-called visit to the old people's home, she wasn't there to help the old people, but rather to help herself receive more points for her club called The Campfire Girls. The only reason she came was to help her own cause instead of helping the needy. A little later in the story, Marian said at the end of the story that she had retrieved her red apple which she had hidden in a bush outside, before entering the house. This shows that Marian is selfish and greedy in taking her red apple home. Marian felt like if she took the apple, she wouldn't come back to full health. In the short story “The Man at the Well,” the theme of selfishness is also addressed. When the group of young children first saw the mysterious man, they really didn't do anything. All they did was have a little chat with the man. The next day, they returned to the well with different kinds of basic necessities, such as food and water. From then on, they treated him like an animal. The theme of selfishness appears when the man asked for help and the group of children decided to ignore the man's cry for help. In doing so, the children demonstrate immaturity and ignorance when it comes to helping the needy, in this case the man from the well. At the end of the story, the children decided to leave the man in the well. After having conversations with the man, they simply showed their immaturity and let him suffer. Instead of helping the man, they instead had fun chatting with him.
