From the sound of the title, Things Fall Apart, we can conclude that the ending will literally fall apart. In this book about a respected leader of the Umuofia tribe of the Igbo people, named Okonkwo, tries to be the opposite of his father. Through many events that occur, such as the murder of his adopted son and his exile to the home of his mother, Mbanta, Okonkwo slowly leads to his downfall by committing suicide. Traditional African values, traditions and culture are falling to the limit because of Western culture, traditions and religion and relate to the poem “The Second Coming” because this poem describes the fall of ancient ways of culture and traditional, just like with Okonkwo. In the end, Okonkwo hangs himself because his clan does not want to make war against the white men. It was a tragic ending, but is his fall the only reason and motivation for naming the book “Things Fall Apart”? Where did Achebe take inspiration from to name his book?
