Essay / The Asian education system compared to the American system
According to the World Rank research team, Japan is at the forefront of industrial advancements that lead to a very large number of patents in the country (211). Japan surpasses America in producing new inventions and conducting scientific research (World Rank Research Team 211). Producing and creating new inventions are the result of highly productive and intelligent individuals, who have received excellent education throughout their school career. The Asian education system is known worldwide for its many advantages over other systems like that of the United States. But they also share their own drawbacks. The American education system is excellent to some extent, but not very effective. According to William S. Robinson in "New Math-Science Study Rates US Students Mediocre at Best", "American students [are] performing less well when they move from grades 4 to 8" and that "achievements in 12th grade are terrible.” . All of this indicates that America's education system is insufficient, leading to poor outcomes in college and the job market. I believe that the United States should take some ideas from the Asian education system and apply them to our system, in order to create an improved education system using the best concepts from both countries. As students of the American education system, we like to think it's the best in the world, but in reality it's not. The roots of this problem come from us; Robinson says students' home environments have a huge impact on their academic success. Robinson also states that "the best students [have] lots of books, [dictionaries] and various study materials..." I believe that the problem of not having a supportive home environment for education is crucial for students of all ages because I have experienced it. ..... middle of paper ...... give us a chance to catch up with Japan in creating new inventions for the world. Having the largest number of pending patents in the world would mean that America has intelligent and efficient individuals. We need to build a strong education system in order to start becoming a global leader in patents. As soon as that happens, we will have the chance to be the greatest country in the world like we once were.Works CitedFallows, James. “Strengths, Weaknesses, and Lessons of Japanese Education.” Discovery and writing.
