Essay / Los Vendidos - 421
Los Vendidos means sellouts. Every character in the play was sold at some point during the play. The characters sold both their races and their way of life. I would say the person who sold the most was the Mexican American, because he sold both his Mexican heritage, his American heritage and his way of life. He wanted to be perfect, so when he discovered that Americans and Mexicans had their flaws, he betrayed them. He must now search for a new and perfect race with which to identify. (He'll be looking for a while.) The Mexican American sold his Mexican heritage when he said, "The Mexicans' problems come from one thing he has." stupid, he is undereducated, he must stay in school. He must be ambitious and forward-looking, and most important, he must think American” (page 382). In his statement, he only uncovers the wrongs of his people and exposes them to the entire room. He shows great disrespect to Mexican heritage by saying everything that is wrong with them. It shows their faults, their weaknesses and their imperfections. I believe that your heritage is who you are and it is you, so you should never disrespect yourself by disrespecting your heritage. I believe he sold out by disrespecting his heritage. the Mexican American is still trying to decide whether to live in Mexico or the United States. When the Mexican American says, "The only thing I don't like is how come I always have to play the fucking Mexican American" (page 384). You're not sure about this statement, whether it betrays his Mexican or American lifestyle. You know he wants to improve because of his attitude toward playing the Mexican American role. The Mexican American doesn't know where he wants to go in life. I guess that proves regardless of your age or education level. you sold people and walked all over them.
