  • Essay / Poverty is the worst form of violence - 753

“You have to be poor to know the luxury of life” (Bartas). Poverty is a term used to identify lack of income. Today, however, a more appropriate term for this universal stipulation is “absolute poverty.” This term recognizes an extreme deficiency in fundamental vital resources; food, shelter and water. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die of hunger every day. Additionally, recent research has proven that more than 3 billion humans on Earth live on less than $2.50 per day. Since half of the world's population is considered poor, carrying out a new global study on poverty is obviously a major necessity. The best way to seek a comprehensive solution to the increasing level of poverty is to study the causes of poverty, its various effects on society and all the solutions currently being implemented or suggested. In the quest for an inclusive solution to poverty, it is mandatory to first identify the causes. Above all the causes of poverty comes the unequal sharing of resources. In most countries, around 20% of the population controls most of the land and wealth, while the remaining 80% receive very few resources that do not meet their needs. Another major cause of poverty is the birth of adolescent girls. According to various studies, lack of education for girls leads to higher birth rates among adolescents. This in turn burdens an already economically struggling community, making the situation worse. A third cause of poverty is low wages, in the face of rising prices of subsistence goods. As a result, the middle class is disappearing in most developing countries and is being added to the poorest population. Millions of people are going hungry because they simply cannot afford to buy food (Jackley). Poverty will continue to have more and more causes if not...... middle of paper ......overty. For now and until a global agreement is reached, resuming and developing structured plans to limit poverty is the best solution. Poverty is a growing scourge that will eventually reach those who live on mountaintops. So, if the world does not take serious action, not only will the poor be the victims of the rich, but the rich will soon be violently victimized by the poor. “Poverty is the worst form of violence” (Ghandi).
