    IntroductionLaw enforcement, like much of the economy and society, has had to adapt to the atmosphere rapidly evolving technological advancements. To counter this progress, education has played a leading role in combating the technological sophistication that is rapidly engulfing the workforce. The need and desire to remain competitive with the technology we have is a need that can be met with more education. Much like technology, education has benefits elsewhere in the equation for remaining competitive. Higher education provides professionalism that comes with the demands placed on students during their years of school study. The activities required by many professors in the field of higher education provide the skills necessary to develop the individual for their place in society. Is it now so difficult to conceive that law enforcement must also do the same? Over the past three decades, the demands facing law enforcement have increased significantly as times have changed and technology-driven problems have emerged. Higher education plays an important role in the professionalization and advancement of the police in the modern context of what is needed and expected of the police. Basic Police Training Academy Training Typically, all officers must complete a training program at a police academy before going out into the field on patrol. Although the duration of training differs by institution and police force, training is always required for all officers. For example, “Virginia State Troopers must complete training lasting approximately 12 months to a year” (Police, 2009).
