The two books, Between the World and Me and Hillbilly Elegy, have very unique procedures of existence. He no longer likes the way he is placed in a class and judged entirely based on the label society gives him. This leads him to a life of hatred and isolation, as he believes that if he frees the arena, they will not be able to judge him. The story continues to show him writing letters to his son telling him that he is unhappy with his life and no longer likes the way he is being treated. Yet at one point in all of this, he does nothing to try to turn his life around. Vance is very different. Instead, he writes to his son to complain about his health, but no longer tries to change anything. This is a toxic state of mind to stay in.
