  • Essay / Danger of Oil - 773

[intro.] What would happen if America had no way to import oil? America uses a third of the world's energy, most of which comes from oil. However, America is only capable of producing a third of the oil needed to run what the country currently burns. The remaining two-thirds of the oil needed comes from unstable regions of the world, such as the Middle East and Africa. Without oil, America could lose its global power to a country that does not rely solely on oil to power its country. [Need I state here what oil is and why it is that way.] Oil is the byproduct of ancient plants that have been buried and compressed for millions of years. In order to extract it from underground, people send waves of energy through the ground and read how long it takes for the waves to return. Then the oil company locates the oil, then begins drilling to expose the oil, then begins pumping it out of the ground. The reason oil is valuable is that it is a liquid capable of burning at high temperatures due to its high carbon and hydrogen content. Burning oil releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane, all powerful poisons and greenhouse gases. [How America is run by the oil company.] The oil companies have taken advantage of the world. Businesses realize that people will do whatever it takes to stay warm, move around, and earn a living. Knowing that America needs oil to function, oil companies are able to control how the economy operates, the price of gas, and its cost to obtain the goods people need to survive. [the oil company on the electric car] “In the 1900s, most cars were electric. " (Reform) However, Henry Ford, the owner of Ford Automobiles, changed the electric car when he mass produced...... middle of paper ...... useless when the wind stops, causing an almost instantaneous power outage. .Nuclear energy. Nuclear power is a controversial energy source because of the amount of radiation it emits. However, nuclear energy is one of the most powerful fuels, but it creates a hazardous waste that will need to be dealt with for “___” years. Batteries have become the new energy substitute. However, batteries cannot hold much energy. The battery has not been tested for its long-term effects.
