Essay / Earth is the only planet Essay - 667
There is no place like home. The house has your room that you sleep in, it has food to eat, and you have your family to surround yourself with. Just like that, Earth has everything we need to survive. It contains water to drink, air to breathe, and land to live on. Unlike the other planets, Earth is the only planet whose name does not come from Greek or Roman mythology. Its German name is Erde, which means earth or soil. More than two thirds of the Earth is covered in water. Earth is the third planet after the Sun and the largest of the inner rocky planets. Ultimately, Earth has everything we need to live and is the only planet to have known life. The formation of the Earth began with a cloud of dust and gas drifting through space about 4,600 million years ago. Bacteria and blue-green algae were the first known life forms but only appear to have appeared 3,500 million years ago. Other species of plants and animals appeared around 570 million years ago and evolved from then on. Some have succeeded until today but others including the dinosaurs. The seven continents moved closer to their current position about 50 million years ago, but are still drifting very slowly across the surface of our planet. Mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, began to form 40 million years ago, and their construction and wear are still controversial. Planet Earth is made up of four layers inside. At the very center is the inner core. According to scientists, the inner core is believed to be a hot ball of solid iron and nickel, with temperatures reaching 11,000 F. It is with all the massive weight exerting pressure around the inner core that it is thought that it is a solid. Just outside middle of paper...water moves around the Earth, causing our weather. The average weather in a region over a long period of time is the climate. The Earth has three major climatic zones. There are the cold polar regions, the warm and humid tropics near the equator, and the areas with warm temperatures in between. Climate zones can be further divided using other elements that affect temperature, such as height of terrain and distance from mountains or sea. The higher the land, the lower the temperature, while the ocean keeps coastal areas warmer in winter and cooler in summer. 220 million years ago, all the continents were joined together to form a huge continent called Pangea, which means "all the Earth." About 110 million years ago, the continents began to divide. Dinosaurs continued to conquer the Earth, but more and more mammals and the first birds began to appear..
