Registered nurses should therefore possess a number of important attributes to provide care in healthcare settings. A nurse must possess exemplary communication skills. A nurse must easily follow instructions and clearly explain patients' health conditions to their families. A nurse must also anticipate the needs of a patient (Jacksonville University School of Nursing 2014). Watching people suffer and die every day can harden a nurse's feelings. The nurse must demonstrate exceptional compassion and empathy to remain an excellent nurse. The nurse must demonstrate empathy with a patient and their families in the event of loss. A nurse does not work in isolation, but rather with other nurses, doctors and other staff in the health care facility. The nurse must have exceptional interpersonal skills. With good interpersonal skills, the nurse will happily care for her patients even when she has friction with other staff members (Sivamalai 2008). The duty can sometimes mean working longer hours, taking on double shifts, which requires flexibility in a nurse. On the job, a nurse is expected to lift patients and other heavy objects. A nurse must adopt healthy eating habits, exercise, and lead an overall healthy lifestyle. By doing so, the nurse will be able to resist physical strain and thus work longer and more efficiently. A nurse must respect people and the rules governing the professional conduct of a nurse.
