America was created as a place of religious freedom. Now that freedom is starting to be taken away from us. One of the main reasons is the debate over whether or not religion should be allowed in schools. Many believe that allowing education and religion to coincide goes against the First Amendment. This argument dates back to the 1800s and has yet to be resolved. The American citizen has the right to freely express and learn about his religion wherever he chooses, including in the public school system. Many people believe that the First Amendment prohibits the teaching or exercise of religion in a public school setting. They believe this because they feel it infringes on the rights of American citizens. There is often discrimination against minority groups. We had an example of this after the September 11 attacks in New York. Discrimination against American Sikhs worsened as they were often accused of being allied with Al-Qaeda. People worry that if we teach religion in schools, bullying will become an even bigger problem (“Religion in Schools: A”). The United States was founded by individuals seeking religious freedom. Since it was the basis for the colonization of America, leaders believed that religion should be included in the constitution. James Madison was very involved in the process of deciding what should be added to the Bill of Rights to protect different religions.
