Essay / In the Skin of a Lion, by Michael Ondaatje - 1129
In the Skin of a Lion is a novel that describes the constant trials that the main characters undergo throughout their lives. It focuses on relationships between immigrant groups, as they make up the majority of Toronto's population. Furthermore, throughout the novel, the idea of immigration prevails. The setting changes - from place to place, as Patrick moves from the countryside to the city and Temelcoff leaves Macedonia for Canada. Personal opinions change as Alice undergoes a transformation from nun to actress and Caravaggio becomes a thief. The characters immigrate with a common goal: acceptance. Thus, in In the Skin of a Lion, immigration is seen as a way to be accepted by society. One of the main characters, Patrick Lewis, grows up in rural Ontario without the presence of a mother, other relatives or friends. His only source of companionship is his father, Hazen Lewis. However, the man is not talkative; as Ondaatje puts it, "Hazen Lewis was a confused man, withdrawn from the world around him, indifferent to the habits of civilization outside his own scope." (Ondaatje 15) Patrick's father is seen as a man dedicated to his work to the extent that he does not wish to take an interest in his child's life. "He was sullen even in the company of his son. All his energy was with the fuse which traveled two minutes from the construction site..." (Ondaatje 18) Even, during these rare moments that Patrick and his father spend together, the objective HazenLewis' principal remains focused on his work, making Patrick feel alone and rejected. However, as Patrick grew up, he moved to Toronto where he was surrounded by people who were close to each other. "Patrick Lewis, "the city immigrant", ...... middle of paper ......
