Ethics and Professionalism in NursingThe combination of professionalism and ethics can be equated to being an extraordinary nurse as they are essential elements of the nursing profession and are essential to trust , to the trust and well-being of patients. Having a nursing degree is not what makes someone a professional. Professionalism is defined as: the competence, good judgment and polite behavior expected of a person trained to do their job well. It is further described as: the conduct, objectives or qualities which characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. Other attributes of a professional nurse include genuine compassion and care for patients. This helps to foster feelings of hope in times of turmoil, while neutralizing feelings of fear. Sometimes no one else is there. Additionally, nursing can be as valuable as the next breath of fresh air in rekindling hope and the will to live.
