Essay / Alfred Hitchcock's Rope - 1306
To this day, Rope, Alfred Hitchcock's first color film, remains one of the most original cinematic dramas. With the exception of the opening credits, Rope was filmed on an individual set located in a soundstage, as if a play were being performed on stage. Despite the confined space the film occupied, the atmospheric anxiety persisted until the very end. Furthermore, Hitchcock managed to create a deception, from the same repetitive shot. Nonetheless, during the film's one hundred and eight minutes, it's hard not to notice the sexual closeness that Phillip and Brandon shared together, making them gay. The film opened on a street in the afternoon, heading toward an apartment where two young men were strangling each other. another man with a rope. From the moment David had been killed and put in a trunk, it was clearly visible that Brandon and Phillip shared an intimate relationship. Robin Wood referred to much of the films' "fascination aroused by the equivocal relationship between the two murderers (the whole action can be seen as an elaboration of repressed homosexual tensions)" (66). However, it is a bit ironic that Alfred Hitchcock cast Farley Granger and John Dall, both gay, to play the roles of two gay students. What's even more scandalous than the strangulation is the party Brandon had planned shortly afterward. Guests arrived at the scene of the crime, to a stunning apartment with incredible views of downtown New York. Soon after, Brandon began to express his superiority by thinking that he could hide David in a large chest that would serve as the centerpiece of the party. The cleaning lady, without knowing it, continued, placing the entry on the chest, which contained the middle...... middle of paper...... mission when one wanted a drink. These are stereotypical roles and behaviors that followed the murder, representing sexual characteristics resulting from the murder experience. Ultimately, when Rupert told the two men that they were going to die, it showed them how karma works. This means they would be killed just like they killed David. Watching this movie, most of the audience may not be as lucky and sophisticated as Phillip and Brandon, but we all have the same rights as them in the freedom of our own happiness. Between the two main characters, one is selfish and the other is a self-confident psychopath. It is clear that the two men shared a close homosexual relationship. Although nothing is said clearly, the sarcastic attitude and sometimes affectionate puns between Brandon and Phillip imply the lovers' intimate communication..
