But he thinks that they will not rebel until they realize their own strength. Throughout the book Winston meets a girl he has been avoiding throughout the book, he believes she was a spy for the Thought Police and when they finally meet she gives him a note and he says I love you..... they meet many people, fall in love and hide from all the microscopes. The place they meet most is above a store in a small room with no telescreen and they trust him a lot. There they meet the boss Obrien who they think is a rebel and part of a group called Brotherhood. O'Brien makes them swear many different things, e.g. You are willing to lay down your life, etc. etc. He gives them the book written by Emanuel Goldstein who is the leader of the Brotherhood. They start reading the book and explaining many theories beyond what they believe. The thought police come to take them to the Ministry of Love. He sees many different people coming in and out of Room 101. O'Brein helped torture Winston and he confessed to everything he did and more. He begins to control Winston by torturing and brainwashing him. For example, he makes him see 5 instead of 4. Once they control his intelligence, they control his emotions and take him to room 101 where they confront him with his worst fear, rats. The only thing that could keep him from being eaten was saying that he hated his lover and that they should do it to her and not him. After that, they finally released him and he started believing everything the Party said. He met his former lover Julia and all the feeling of rebelling was gone once
