  • Essay / Benefits of Cerebral Palsy - 703

Physiotherapists, over the years, have attempted to find the most beneficial type of treatment for children with cerebral palsy (CP) to reduce their activity limitations and of participation. Eventually, the implementation of assistive devices (AD) for cerebral palsy patients yielded significant results and, due to the magnitude of these results, the government decided to get involved by creating laws through history to promote such use. In 2004, the government created the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) which "replaced the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (EAHCA), renamed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Disabilities Act of 1990 (IDEA), which was amended in 1997 and 2004." That same year, the Assistive Technology Act of 2004 (ATA) was created and aimed to "make assistive technologies accessible and affordable” to help people with disabilities “live independently, benefit from education, and pursue meaningful careers.” Historically, many studies have been performed to determine which assistive device is most beneficial in facilitating interventions, as well as most effective during daily activities. There are many different brands, types, and styles of ADs, including exercise aids, functional aids, and trainers. Additionally, each CP case may require different ADs, and the prescription of an AD is considered a deciding factor on a case-by-case basis. Due to the number of variables that can be present, it is difficult to compare different ADs as it varies for each patient, but what can be done is locate research on possible ADs and compare the results and benefits of each article. Three research articles that have been reviewed on this topic include:...... middle of paper ......y and teaching normal gait patterns would be a gait trainer and walker. A gait trainer is a “modified treadmill technology delivered by an instrumented bridge that monitors and records specific gait parameters, including step length, gait speed, right-to-left time distribution (step symmetry ) and the ambulation index. The gait trainer is designed to provide audio and visual feedback for patient compliance. All of these factors are used to determine what part of the child's normal gait is missing. In this randomized controlled trial, two groups received the same traditional physical therapy exercise program, but one group added the gait trainer to their treatment to notice any substantial changes. The experimental group improved significantly in all aspects of gait and “showed significant improvement compared to those in the control group »..”
