  • Essay / Review of a Whole New Mind by Daniel H. Pink - 790

Will Right-Handed Brains Rule the Future? A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, a book by Daniel H. Pink evaluates this critical question. Pink's book is divided into two parts. The first part sets out the general idea behind it, gives an overview of the main differences between our left and right hemispheres, presents the reasons why abundance, Asia and automation are pushing the world into the "era conceptual”. This illustrates why people who master high concept and high touch set the tempo of modern life. The second part of the book covers the six essential right-brain abilities that Pink described as necessary for success in the conceptual age. Design. History. Symphony. Empathy. Play. Meaning. Pink devotes a chapter to each of these six senses, describing how they are used in business and everyday life. Pink advances the thesis that we are moving out of centuries of left-brain dominance and into a new era where right-brain qualities will be valued and needed and to thrive in this new era we must adopt a holistic approach to work. and life. Daniel Pink suggests this due to three forces: abundance, Asia and automation Today's society is moving from a knowledge age to a conceptual age in which there is a greater need for the type of thinking and attitudes characterized by the right hemisphere of the brain. Pink makes a strong case for how abundance produces a greater need for R-directed sensibilities. With abundance, societies began to seek more beauty, spirituality, and emotion. Companies differentiate themselves on the basis of the “aesthetic imperative,” that is, beauty, uniqueness and meaning. Pink illustrates this by giving examples of converting mundane products into objects of desire such as see...... middle of paper ......g towards a liberal arts degree. I was studying things like critical thinking, reasoning, analysis, and knowledge acquisition. My studies were characterized by L-directed thinking and focused on qualities such as sequence, function, and literal meaning. Regarding Pink's thesis, I am an L-oriented thinker who lacks areas described in the book such as his six senses and does not take a holistic approach to thinking. Due to my disposition to think towards the L, my career development strategy will focus in part on ensuring that I have the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to manage a career in the economy and society of Today. This will require R-oriented skills including design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. Works CitedPink, Daniel H.. A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.
