Essay / 12 Steps to a Mentoring Program for Any Organization
IntroductionThe purpose of this article is to provide readers with the steps to follow to implement a mentoring program for their organization. The steps listed below were developed by the United States Office of Personnel Management and have been implemented by a multitude of Fortune 500 companies. According to the website businessdictionary.com, mentoring is defined as: " A system of employee training in which a senior or more experienced person (the mentor) is assigned to act as an advisor, advisor, or guide to a junior or trainee. The mentor is responsible for providing support and feedback to the person in their charge.” The first step identified by the Office of Personnel Management is to develop a recruiting and marketing strategy (OPM, 2008, p. 9). Communication is essential to the success of mentoring programs. An appropriate marketing strategy will both advertise the program and recruit mentors and protégés. Additionally, one of the biggest challenges of communication and a mentoring program is finding mentors. Often, potential mentors do not fully understand the value of getting involved in a mentoring program. To counter this problem, an organization's marketing strategy should include displaying the benefits of mentors and protégés. One of the strategies for recruiting mentors and protégés is to develop brochures, flyers, and posters to distribute throughout the organization. Another solution would be to send an email from the agency head or other senior executive requesting participants. Yet another technique would be to have leaders and managers promote the program and solicit participation from their followers. The second step identified by the Office of Personnel Management is to match mentors and protégés (OPM, 2008...... middle of paper ......will address the 12-step process identified by the Office of personnel management to use if organizations are considering a mentoring program Not only are these steps used by the federal government, but they have been successfully implemented by various Fortune 500 companies. )(Cameron and Whetton, 2011, p. 117)(OPM, 2008, p. 9)ReferencesBest Practices: Mentoring (2008, September). development/bestpractices-mentoring.pdf BusinessDictionary.Com Retrieved from http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/mentoring.html Whetten, DA, & Cameron, KS (2011).
