People stretch for different reasons, but according to Acefitness.org, the main reasons people stretch are to decrease muscle stiffness, increase range of motion, reduce risk of injury, help relieve post-exercise pain, improve posture, help reduce or manage stress, reduce muscle tension and improve muscle relaxation, improve mechanical efficiency and overall functional performance, prepare the body for stress of exercise, promote circulation and reduce the risk of low back pain. People doubt whether stretching is helpful in some cases, but there are many facts that explain how stretching can be beneficial in people's daily lives. Stretching is not a new idea that was recently introduced by "tree advocates", or by someone who wanted to become one with nature: The ancient Greeks used stretching as part of of gymnastic training which included health maintenance, athletics and military physical training. Stretching as part of manual therapy dates back to Hippocrates and Galen, chief physician to the gladiators of Pergamum from 157 AD and therefore probably the first sports therapist. (Tierney) Stretching has been around for hundreds of years and now serves some of the same purposes as it did in 157 AD.
