  • Essay / Othello by Shakespeare - There would be no Othello...

There would be no Othello without Iago Although the name of the play written by William Shakespeare is called "Othello", the character of Othello is not the main character, but rather Iago is. Iago is the character who drives the play, he is the one who makes things happen. Without his greed and hatred, there would be no game at all. The entire play centers around Iago's revenge, and in doing so he is willing to make the lives of others miserable. Throughout "Othello", Iago uses the other characters to avenge the evil acts that Othello inflicted on him, and he will do anything to achieve this. The play begins with Iago not achieving the position he wanted from Othello, but rather the position has been given to Cassio, who, in Iago's mind, is not qualified for the position. This is where Iago begins to weave his web of destruction. Iago hates Othello with a passion, and in his heart he truly believes that Othello slept with his wife Emilia. "I hate the Moor, and it is abroad that 'between my sheets' has done my office" Othello. Act I. iii. 429-431. Being passed over for lieutenant made him even crazier. He then decided on a plan and took all necessary steps "to abuse Othello's ear by telling him that he (Cassio) knows his (Othello's) wife too well" Othello. Act I. iii. 438-439.Roderigo was Iago's puppet. He believed everything Iago told him and always did what he said, which ended up killing him. Throughout the play, we often wonder why Roderigo continues to follow Iago's demands, and it is because he truly loved Desdemona. He was ready to kill himself if he couldn't have her "I...... middle of paper ......sp; Every person who came into contact with Iago ended up dead or hurt in one way or another. He manipulated everyone he knew for his own ends. In the end, he got everything he wanted. He took revenge on Othello. ended up killing three people and seriously injuring one. One of the people who died was his own wife, but he wouldn't have been able to care until he succeeded. Had it not brought with it the animosity, hatred, greed and selfishness, none of these hostile things would have happened, but then there wouldn't have been a play on The Bad Ones either. Characters are needed in plays and in life If we always got what we wanted and bad things never happened, then life would be very boring and play with Othello's mind, and he would enjoy it. a lot of that. that was his goal and he achieved it.
