Essay / Erikson's stages of development: the case of a 19-year-old
The first person I interviewed was a 19-year-old Hispanic high school student. She is very small and meets the criteria to be considered a dwarf. Regarding the five-factor model described in Craig & Dunn 2013, p. 436, this person is emotionally stable with traits associated with the high end. More specifically, she is relaxed and very extroverted. In terms of openness to experiences, she describes herself as very imaginative, creative and intellectual. On the last two factors, she identified herself as a warm, friendly, organized, and persistent person, clearly showing her transition from adolescent to young adult. Another trait is his warm and kind presence. This is expressed in the form of volunteering because she loves helping people. His leadership skills are known not only within his own ethnic group but throughout his school. For example, she participated in the “Challenge Day Program” which helped more than 100 students deal with issues related to discrimination, bullying and social isolation. As I continued my interview, it became clear to me that she was not in a position to select a partner. Although she had a few boyfriends in high school, she acknowledged that it would be difficult for her to balance a serious relationship and trying to work her way through graduate school. For now, her plan is to earn an associate’s degree in mental health and human services as a first step toward her graduate degree. My thoughts on where I think this person is in Erikson's stages of development is Intimacy versus Isolation. As stated by Erikson (1963), this stage emphasizes relationships and the display of affection and love. My interviewee has a great affinity for relationships as she is able to find herself in the middle of a paper......I have had excellent mentors both in my professional career and in my spiritual practices. I have integrated my cultural heritage into American culture and am in the process of obtaining my bachelor's degree in human development. I certainly analyze the two years 19. old student and I have been a rich experience. I see the limits of the normative models we both have. There have been struggles and triumphs as contextual factors such as income and cultural influences have affected our own development. For example, analyzing the problems proposed by Peck and comparing them with my own experience was truly humbling, as I understood the need for a plan as I move into a more stable and fulfilled stage called the middle adulthood.
