Essay / Body Piercing, Tattooing, and Public School Dress Code
Body Piercing, Tattooing, and School Dress Code Body piercing in high schools is certainly not a new topic to me. I have had numerous run-ins with my school administration over ear piercings and other body piercings. Due to my multiple ear piercings, the counselor and principal have already told me that I cannot have body piercings. In other circumstances, I might except this response. However, since the school dress code doesn't address body piercings in the handbook, they can't say anything and as a result I can get my body pierced anywhere and there's nothing they can do about it. Although I can understand the school's point of view on this subject. things, I always have my own personal opinions. I know the school is worried about people paying attention to themselves by having things like piercings and tattoos, but I don't really think they have to tell students how they can and cannot dress themselves. I can also see where they might think the student is at risk of having the jewelry ripped from his skin if he fights too much or isn't careful. However, I feel that the student can make this decision for themselves. My point of view is very different from his. I think the decision should be entirely up to the student with the piercing. I also think students have the right to decide whether the ring or jewelry interferes with their education. Personally, I don't think anyone's jewelry interferes with my own education. I know several people who have pierced navels, noses, tongues, eyebrows, cheeks and lips and it doesn't seem to bother any of them or their classmates or pillars. While I'm on the side of people wanting the right to keep their piercings, I feel like people can easily overdo it. If I'm walking down the hall and I see a person of either gender who has multiple facial piercings and jewelry hanging all over their face, then I think it would bother me. I think a maximum of three facial piercings would still allow the student to have a very different look without drawing too much attention. You can still get as many piercings as you want on parts of your body that are not visible in public..
