Essay / Tobacco Industry Ethics - 1021
Tobacco Industry EthicsThe tobacco industry is a very unethical industry, due to the long-term effects of tobacco on humans. The industry also does not evaluate ethical and social responsibility as well as it should. Many factors make the industry unethical; Some of the reasons are the way cigarette companies around the world advertise, the way governments and cigarette companies make huge profits from the sale of cigarettes, and the health risks associated with labeling. However, I believe that tobacco companies can do something to improve their ethics strategy. I think they should always look out for the best interest of their consumers and advertise strictly on the effects of cigarettes and what people get for their money. One way the tobacco industry can be more ethical is to change their advertising strategy. I think the current advertising strategy is very misleading about cigarettes. Examples of this unethical advertising can be found in Argentina, here 20 percent of television advertising is devoted to smoking advertisements, as well as in countries in and around Africa there are billboards display that depicts a man in a business suit getting out of a black Mercedes as a driver. holds the door. This shows that cigarettes make people elegant and sophisticated, making them look not only harmless but elegant. Another good example of unethical representation on cigarettes is found in Nigeria; here they are promoting a cigarette for graduates, with a photo of a university and a student in a cap and gown. As if it wasn't a misleading visual, they add a slogan that says: "A very important cigarette for very important people." These advertisements and slogans are middle of paper......they sit back and let the people of their country slowly die of addiction and disease knowingly. I believe the tobacco industry is unethical. They provide a product that causes addiction and possibly death if smoking continues for most of a person's life. I think the tobacco industry needs to take more responsibility for its products. I think they should do this by avoiding advertising the false image of a cigarette smoker and focusing on what consumers are actually going to get for their money when they buy cigarettes. They should focus on how it makes people feel and what the cigarette experience is really like in the most literal terms. Cigarette manufacturers should also inform their customers up front, on easy-to-read labels, about the long-term and short-term effects of smoking so that people are clear about what they are buying and what its effects are...
