    In “Young Goodman Brown,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses mystery and suspense to grab the reader's attention. Hawthorne makes us think about all this witchcraft, mystery, and how the characters are portrayed. We should not view this as just a suspenseful story, but also see the many forms of symbolism Hawthorne uses. The author shows that a strong faith is the greatest thing in a man or woman, and when that faith is ruined, the effects of this can cause doubt and madness towards the rest of the world. Brown shows that he has a strong faith before entering the forest and sometimes during his journey to the Black Forest. Hawthorne uses the name of Brown's wife, Faith, as a symbol of Brown's own faith throughout the story. Brown's strong faith can be seen through his wife: "And Faith, as his wife was aptly named, threw her pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap."
