Sure, there was some backlash, but it came from an irrelevant group of people. It couldn't hurt them in any way. That's what they thought, but it wasn't. Till's wrongful death has sparked opinions and justified responses across the country. The attention was overwhelming, and her once-proud husband, who had worn this half-sneer throughout the trial, was now casting his disapproving eyes at her. Maybe it was the same eyes he gave Till when the boy said "I'm as good as you" (Huie). She had to prevent him from understanding her. She had to protect herself so as not to become his next victim: “You had to be more beautiful than ever” (Gabbin 7).
