The United States of America is divided on many issues. The main issues in this country that divide the people usually revolve around the president and presidential elections. There are two main parties that have presidential candidates; Democrats and Republicans. Most Democrats are more liberal than Republicans. They want to help people who live in the country more than Republicans and are generally pro-abortion. Republicans are, in most cases, more conservative. They want to keep government out of personal lives as much as possible and are anti-abortion. These characteristics of the two major parties generally influence people to vote one way or the other. In the 2000 election, Democrats asked Vice President Al Gore to run for president against Republican Texas Governor George W. Bush. Besides the usual controversial issues, this election was also controversial because of the manner in which Republican Governor George W. Bush won the presidency. It was 2000, in November. It would be the first time since 1888 that a president won the electoral vote without winning the popular vote. Vice President Al Gore beat Governor George W. Bush by more than 500,000 popular votes, while Bush led Gore by just four electoral college votes. To make matters even more dramatic, the decisive state, Florida, was governed by George W. Bush's brother, Jeb Bush. Florida was probably the state in which both candidates campaigned the most because the polls there were very close, showing Al Gore with a slight lead over Bush in that state. The real problem in this election was the media's claim that Al Gore had won the state of Florida, which would give him the presidency. After telling G... middle of paper ...
