  • Essay / Mexican-American Essay - 746

Mexicans come to the United States to pursue the American dream. For them, this means having a well-paying job and a place for themselves and their families to live. In Mexico, they don't have the same resources as in the United States. Mexico is currently waging a war against drug cartels in its own country. People are fleeing because they want their families to survive the horrific acts that drug cartels are capable of. Mexicans don't come to the country to try to take everything from Americans, they come to contribute to the country. They plan to have a job and an education, just like other citizens. Since Hispanics made up a large portion of the United States population, Mexican Americans have learned to consider themselves Americans, even if they are not legally so. Americans don't like to think of themselves as Americans because they will always be immigrants or so-called "foreigners" to them. With the few opportunities Mexican Americans get from the government, they attempt to prove society wrong. When DACA was passed by Congress, many undocumented Mexicans were able to attend college and earn a degree. They were able to make a name for themselves and gradually get the treatment they also deserve, which is what many immigrant groups seek. Mexican Americans see other immigrants, just as they see themselves, the people who come to the country.
