Many similarities exist between Mesopotamian and Greek societies. As history progresses many cultural advancements occur, but societies also adopt some of the same characteristics as previous societies, you will notice this between the Mesopotamian and Greek civilizations. After discovering Greek civilizations, I immediately began to make connections with Mesopotamian societies. I've noticed similarities in every aspect of society, whether it's religion, the military, architecture, or any other cultural idiosyncrasies. Both societies began the same way, as city-states. A city-state is a city that, together with its surrounding territory, forms an independent state. The creators of Mesopotamian society were the Sumerians; by 3000 BCE, they had established a number of independent cities in southern Mesopotamia (Spielvogel 7). In 750 BCE, Greek society began bombarding, and it all began with the polis, or city-state (Spielvogel 60). In both societies, each city-state had its own political, economic, social, and cultural systems. State to city-state. Similar problems arose within both societies regarding city-states. In Mesopotamian society, city-states lasted from 3000 to 2340 BCE, the beginning of the dynastic era. As the number of Sumerian city-states increased and states expanded, new conflicts arose as city-states fought for control of land and water (Spielvogel 9). In the new world of the Greek city-states, war became an integral part of the Greek way of life (Spielvogel 61). Mesopotamian and Greek societies had the same type of government within city-states, they were both theocracies. They are similar in terms of religion, education, government and military, among others. Since the beginning of Greek society, they have had attributes that parallel the cultural path blazed by Mesopotamian society and we can even trace some similarities back to today's society.
