  • Essay / Music Censorship in Music - 1319

As David Machin stated in 2010, "lyrics are not just about artists telling stories, but also about communicating discourses about their identities." (Machin D, 2010: 78) indeed, the lyrics of a song play an important role in connecting with people and providing them with reflexive identities. When people listen to music, the linguistic meaning gives the audience a better representation of the music and creates a more emotional connection between the singers and the audience. Furthermore, as different musical genres have different representational characteristics, the lyrics also differ from each other within the different genres, while the composition of the lyrics also changes with the development of the social movement, as Kaufmann explained, “the recording industry has been blamed for causing morally or socially unacceptable behavior, thereby placing it in an uncomfortable defensive position. To conclude, lyric censorship is a necessary regulation to protect children from any mistakes, it has been applied to music production and has an important effect in this industry, however, a part of the public and artists still resist this regulation , because it may change the original meaning of the lyrics and the emotion that the artists wanted to express in the first place might not be complete in the end. So, more intelligence needs to be applied to creating the lyrics and making the lyrics work both legally and presentationally..
