Essay / Good versus Evil - 965
Good versus EvilThe question is whether Roger, Jack, Simon are bad or good. What are their actions motivated by impulse or choice. Also if Roger, Jack and Simon are innocent if they are good or if their evil is not innocent. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the characters' levels of innocence to identify which actions are good and which actions are evil. Throughout the book, Simon is presented as a morally good character who shows no signs of evil. Simon always seeks to help others, for example “Simon found for them the fruits they could not reach, plucked the best from the foliage, and returned them to the endlessly outstretched hands” (Golding 967). When he does this, it shows that he will help when no one else will. Another reason why Simon is a good person is when he discovers that the beast is not real. All he wants is to tell the other boys about the news. One last thing that makes Simon good is when he helps Piggy find his glasses when Jack dropped his glasses. Simon is good but he is impulsive in his actions and does not think. Simon's actions are very impulsive in nature as he does not think before acting. For example, when Simon comes across the group of boys during their hunting dance, it leads to his murder. He was thinking about what was going to happen. He just wanted to inform the other boys about the beast. He is also impulsive when he volunteered to go tell Piggy that he, Ralph, and Jack wouldn't be home until dark. He did it without thinking and he knew the other boys wouldn't go because they didn't have the courage to go back to camp alone in the dark. A final reason of two why he is impulsive is "Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and pushed... middle of paper ...... uh, actions are based on choices and he's mean. so he is not innocent. Roger is not innocent throughout the book Lord of the Flies. He is not innocent because he is one of the most aggressive boys in the book (source 4). Secondly, he is not innocent, he killed an innocent boy named Simon. He also participated in Piggy's murder. Being part of these two murders is one of the main reasons he is not innocent. A final reason why Roger is not innocent is because Roger lost his mind and went crazy; he was mean and hurt most of the boys in one way or another. Nothing Roger did was innocent. In conclusion, this is why Roger and Jack are both evil. Simon is also ultimately good throughout the book. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses characters' innocence levels to identify which actions are good and which actions are bad..
