Essay / Analysis by Dana Gioia - 789
The name of this piece of literature itself is able to help its reader better understand the meaning of this work without the reader having to start digging into the work. This helps draw the reader into the work with anticipation. Dana Gioia alludes to the fact that although the number of poetry lovers has increased over time, the art of poetry has slowly been lost among the average citizen. Gioia urges poets to pursue more passionate publicity for the enriching benefits of poetry. The passion that Gioia conveys about this topic also helps to draw the reader into his article, as the reader can easily conclude how influential poetry can be in one's life. Literature can have a major influence. He states that although there are on average more books, articles and magazines accessible today than in the past, people still seem to lack the passion necessary to truly appreciate poetry for what it is. This is where the question arises: “can poetry matter?” ". Gioia states, “…as the specialized audience for American poetry has steadily expanded, its general readership has declined.” This helps demonstrate the theory that although resources have increased dramatically over the years, the decline in the number of passionate poetry fans has simply declined in ways too vast to account for. These differences can be observed by considering the income of a poet in today's society versus the past. In the past, a poet could easily support his family through his writing alone. Their work as active poets was considered so beneficial that the amount of their remuneration was far more than necessary. Today, a poet can barely earn a decent living just by writing poetry without the help of any other source of income. This is because the need for poetry has become less evident in the minds of many citizens.
