Essay / Presentations of Women in the Romantic Era
Evaluate and respond to presentations of women in the Romantic Era. Feel free to discuss presentations of women, by women (like Austen's Persuasion) as well as presentations of women by men (like the "she" in Byron's "She Walks in Beauty"). Consider the following questions: Are these presentations problematic? What do they tell us about the values and ideas of the Romantic period? Did any of these presentations subvert (complicate or challenge) the era's notions of femininity? At the beginning of the 19th century, there were two different periods: the Age of Reason (late) and the Romantic period (beginning). The Age of Reason represented the highest ideals in life, with art and literature being the only things they primarily focused on. The Industrial Revolution was England's greatest turning point, creating jobs in factories and bringing wealth and prosperity to the country. On the website scholieren.com it was stated that “young people across Europe thought freedom and equality were very important”. During the Romantic period, women had no voice in political matters, were housewives and did not have the right to vote. But what is the real role of women? A woman was treated like property and their only job was to stay home and take care of household chores and their children. Many writers like Austen and Byron had two different ideas about romantic women. But what were the real opinions of these two authors towards women in the Romantic era? Jane Austen only wrote about the world she knew, because she only lived in small villages in the south of England. Austen wrote about the normal daily lives of women of her age and social class.
