Morgan ThouttSOC 100Duration: April 11, 2014Spring 2014ESSAY #2Sex Stereotypical Traits: “Boys don’t cry” is a phrase that virtually every boy has heard in their life. Masculine and feminine stereotypes are social constructs used to understand what is expected of both sexes. Gender is a social term meaning that our culture has developed what it means to be male or female. The traits shown on the chart are suitable for men and women respectively. I believe that the differences expressed by the two sexes are genetically programmed. I feel pressure to conform to traditional traits in my daily life. Often, individuals are admired when they conform to gender expectations and adopt long-established, culturally accepted roles. Personally, I feel it the most when I live in my home in Fort Collins. I live with both sexes and it is clearly expected that each person acts a certain way. Boys don't show their emotions, they are constantly competing against each other, and they thrive on the idea that they are independent. The girls of the house are very emotional, willing to compromise to make the other housemates happy and are extremely dependent on others (this is especially seen when they are given advice and reassurance). The origins of the pressure to conform come from people. with which you surround yourself. The individuals in my house are extremely involved in the concept of “fitting in with the crowd.” They strive to be accepted by their peers and regularly make sure they are. People also feel the pressure of modern society. Both sexes are expected to behave a certain way and are looked down upon if they choose to innovate. The pressure to conform... middle of paper......; therefore, they share what they want. After watching this video, it became clear that my views on traditional masculine and feminine traits would be influenced. I understand the pressure placed on men and women to conform to society and the gender roles that come with their culture. I will make a conscious effort to encourage men to act outside of the image they believe to be masculine. I will let them share their feelings and provide emotional support when they need it. I will also look at feminism differently. Before watching this video, I thought feminism was a good thing. Now I believe the idea is good but it should change its objectives. I think women should focus more on equality and less on women's superiority. My thoughts regarding gender roles will be influenced after watching this film.
