  • Essay / Humanitarian Intervention and the UN and NATO - 1822

In this world, conflicts and crises are constant events within and between nations. Given the diversity of cultural differences, it is common for disagreements to start as simple arguments and quickly escalate into wars. When something happens in a country and it starts to get out of control, the attention of those who can help is needed. Ideas such as the UN and NATO exist to try to help resolve conflicts and crises. It is also a way to unite countries by creating stronger alliances and helping and protecting each other. Humanitarian intervention is known to have both positive and negative effects and certainly has advantages and disadvantages. Strategic efforts at humanitarian intervention are ineffective because these efforts are not sincere but only aim to prevent their own citizens from becoming invaders. The very purpose of the UN is to have a strong international force to help make the world a safer place by providing a means to bring justice and peace to the world. When a country needs intervention in the midst of its crisis, the UN decides how it will intervene. Like the UN, NATO's goal is to protect the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. Both of these projects have a great goal and have had some success at times, but they have faced some problems. In 1998, President Milosevic of Serbia was planning attacks in hopes of "cleansing the Serbian homeland of its Albanian intruders within weeks" (Jones 329). European countries then released the Kosovo Verification Commission to contribute to the ceasefire between the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) and Serbian paramilitaries who had already murdered masses of Kosovo men. Western countries that were... middle of paper ...... if they only intervene for themselves or if they avoid problems. It is time for humanitarian intervention to take the next step. The only way to achieve their goals of world peace and justice for all is to act in the right way with the right means. Work cited “The LRA conflict”. Invisible children.
