The importance of the Christmas tree in the doll's house is linked to the character of Nora. The purpose of a Christmas tree is to look beautiful to impress the people who come into your home. A Christmas tree is usually the first thing you notice when you enter a room. A Christmas tree's bright lights and brightly colored ornaments immediately catch your eye. I believe Ibsen is trying to connect the two. Just like the Christmas tree, Nora is the first thing people notice when they enter the house. Nora's goal in the house is to impress those who come. She has a bright smile and a cheerful personality that can't seem to be ignored. She's not expected to do much except look good. They have a housekeeper to look after the children and it is Torvald who goes to work to support them. Another way to view the relationship between Nora and the tree is to cover up the truth with beautiful things. A Christmas tree is ugly in itself; once you decorate it, the shift from ugly to beautiful happens. No one would settle for a Christmas tree and leave it bare in their house. Once you remove these decorations, they slowly become ugly again. Just like covering up the ugliness of the tree, Nora does the same with her lies. She collects her father's signature to obtain a loan. She must hide the ugliness of the lie she committed to save Torvald's life. She
