Essay / Many differences between Disney's Pocohontas and John...
The Disney film "Pocahontas" and John Smith's "The General History of Virginia" had many differences, other than those that someone could compare. The two versions had different thoughts and views on the stories of Pocahontas, the Native Americans, and John Smith. The way Disney portrayed Pocahontas was more about fixing enemies, making compromises between two parties, and thinking that there was more to life than materialistic things. On the other hand, John Smith's account of what happened was very different from Disney's version of what happened. For example, John Smith describes his trip to Virginia as a long journey, filled with hunger, and the majority of the people who went on the trip with John Smith ended up dying. In the end, he and others are captured by the Native Americans who reside on these lands. However, no one knows the actual events that took place during this time. John Smith explains the hardships of the journey in "The General History of Virginia" that he and others endured. Eventually landing on land and discovering the head of the Chickahamania River, the colony endured disease, severe weather, Native American attacks, and famine all of which threatened to destroy the colony. Smith talks about his accomplishments as a “good leader” and how he helped in many ways. John Smith was captured by the Native Americans and brought back to camp. Within an hour, the Native Americans prepared to shoot him, but the Native Americans did as Chief Powhatan ordered and brought rocks to knock his brains out. John Smith gave a double ivory compass to the chief of Powhatan. Native Americans marveled at the compass parts. After the Native Americans admired the compass for an hour, Chief Powhatan held...... middle of paper ......p with the rescue of John Smith. In both stories, it was Pocahontas who resolved the differences between them in both stories. Whether Pocahontas is young or older than she actually was, she has a good heart to save someone, whether they are the same or different from her and her people. To conclude with “The General History of Virginia” and the Disney version of Pocahontas. , the two stories had two different opinions and points of view. Although Disney's depiction of Pocahontas was seen as offensive to Native Americans, no one really knows the actual events that took place during that time. People will still think John Smith's version was a little hysterical, while Native Americans will offend the Disney film Pocahontas. Both John Smith and Disney gave their own version of their story. Others will continue to do the same.
