Essay / The New World - 800
In America, in the 1650s, the population of the Chesapeake increased with the birth rate. To make a profit, Chesapeake produced high-quality tobacco. Colonial masters first adopted the institution of indentured servitude rather than labor slavery; African slaves were very expensive and indentured servants needed jobs. African slavery quickly replaced the indentured servants of Bacon's Rebellion and caused fewer problems. Tobacco is very important to the economy; Europeans bought slaves to work in the fields. Slavery began on the coasts of Africa. Africans were very poor and had difficulty feeding themselves. Europeans began capturing Africans and shipping them to America. Of the 11 million African men, women and children shipped to the New World as common merchandise, 2 million of them died. The Africans were mistreated, the Europeans whipped them and handcuffed them for transport. Africans who survived were sent to work in the fields of sugarcane and other products that Europeans thrived on, such as sugar, tobacco, cotton, and other New World products. Many Africans and Europeans realized that people like Europeans needed slaves and would be willing to pay anything to obtain them. Soon after realizing this, Africans began selling theirs for large sums of money, as did Europe. As African slaves were very expensive and the European economy was weak, Europeans had to look for different types of slaves. Europeans needed slaves to plant corn and especially tobacco. In the 1630s, 1.5 million pounds of tobacco were shipped from the Chesapeake Bay, and nearly 40 million pounds a year by the 1700s. Desperate for jobs, Europeans were sent to America. These people were called indentured servants; the...... middle of paper...... mortality rates as high as twenty percent and the terrified survivors were auctioned off for the ports of the New World. England knew how to control the Africans and did not care as much about them as the indentured servants, which allowed the Africans to have less problems and not behave as badly as the indentured servants. Slavery and labor were a major part of the New World. This opened up opportunities for indentured servants and masters, but not all was good. The indentured servants did not work entirely because of Bacon's rebellion. Bacon's Rebellion brought much unrest and violence to the cities, forcing England to seek other types of slaves. Slavery cost Africans dearly, but they ended up being the best slaves in the New World in terms of bad behavior. The New World learned that Africans were easy to capture and trade. Although tobacco didn't make much money, it changed the New World's thinking about slavery..
