Community impact, which includes the national, state, and community levels, is crucial to teen suicide prevention. By involving the community, a more effective prevention plan can be developed, as well as measures to manage the situation more effectively. The Office of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Action Alliance for Suicide revised the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) in 2012. In which they categorized prevention interventions suicide into two categories: targeted prevention at the individual level and targeted prevention at the population level. (HSS, 2012). To target the individual level, the NSPP emphasized the role that every American can play in protecting their loved ones from suicide. To target prevention at the population level, the NSPP provides a framework for schools, businesses, health systems, clinicians, and many other sectors by learning from their research and teaching methods to identify patterns of suicide and suicidal behavior within a group or population. . There is also the Best Practices Registry Suicide Prevention (BPR) which is a registry of best practices in a specific area. The BPR is maintained through the collaboration of the Suicide Prevention Center (SPRC) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The registry is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which identifies, reviews, and disseminates information on best practices that meet the specific goals of the NSSP (“Suicide Prevention,” 2009).
