  • Essay / Importance of Shakespeare in Schools - 812

Shakespeare's work should be compulsory for study in the Australian National English Curriculum. Students should be exposed to Shakespeare's works because they include timeless themes, his work enriches students' language, lacks another modernized alternative, and finally, because Shakespeare established the modern English language. Shakespeare is one of the most studied writers in history, as his work has been taught for 300 years to this day. Therefore, Shakespeare's work is expected to become compulsory for study in the English curriculum and will hopefully remain so for the next 300 years. Shakespeare uses timeless themes and emotions in his work that not only teach us valuable lessons in English and literature, but also provide us with real life lessons. Shakespeare's plays depict universally constant issues and topics that students still go through in their daily lives. The problems are presented to the reader with great power, tolerance, wisdom, humanity and expressive language. Therefore, by watching how Shakespeare's characters deal with their tragedies and downfalls, students are forced to question their own moral choices and gradually learn to solve their own problems and life situations based on the teachings of these characters. Providing students with ethical role models to follow is extremely vital as they are at an age where they are still shaping their values, morals, and opinions about the world, and Shakespeare's plays will guide them on the right path. The evidence to support this argument is my personal experience with Macbeth, because through the study of Macbeth I have learned that sometimes too much supreme ambition and the pursuit of endless power can destroy you. According to some...... middle of paper ......rds of classical literature and foreign languages and created its own new words by brain Shakespeare formed 2000 new English words during his 52 years of life, words that formed our modern language. Therefore, after all the achievements Shakespeare made in the English language, the least we owe him is for his work to be required in the English curriculum. We owe as much to Shakespeare as to the other historical heroes we study in history. Because without Shakespeare, English history would not have been formed and the language we use today would not have been developed. The evidence to support this theory are some words and expressions that we use when we speak today that were originally created by Shakespeare, such as: William Shakespeare invented English literature; therefore, it is only impartial to learn it from the very source.
