There comes a time in life when people put so much pain on other humans, and now they are stuck on the decision of whether to take revenge or just forgive and advance for their own good. . In the novel The Tattooed Soldier by Hector Tobar, Antonio Bernal is a Guatemalan citizen who saves his life by settling in Los Angeles but who is still haunted by the terrible past of his wife and his little boy murdered by a soldier with a symbol of a yellow Jaguar on this arm. Sitting in front of Antonio is Guillermo Longoria, who appears to have the exact mark of the Yellow Jaguar Death Squad on his arm. Forgiving is one of the most difficult human moral standards, but practicing forgiveness is a choice. Although some people view forgiveness as justice, sometimes the truth must be revealed in seeking revenge for the love and protection of others. In all its aspects, forgiveness is at the heart of healthy living. This is one of the important steps to move forward in life and it is done by letting go of the negative injustice of the past. Being able to forgive means having the strength to restore justice, but many would say that to forgive is to say that what was caused is acceptable. Forgiving does not mean forgetting, it creates the ability not to punish others. In 1972, Phan Thi Kim Phuc, a nine-year-old Canadian girl of Vietnamese origin, suffered third-degree burns when the South Vietnamese air force bombed the village of Trang Bang. Doctors didn't know if Kim would survive. Fortunately, she did so and forty years later, she decided to forgive those who had attacked her. Forgiveness is not an obligation and when Kim was asked about the incident, she replied: “I avoid that. It's my choice. I avoid living in the past. It's hard to sleep at night knowing that the person who intentionally took a loved one is living their life without any consequences.
