  • Essay / Self-Esteem Research - 2008

1.0 Introduction1.1 Background of the ProblemWilliam James and Mead (1890) were among the first psychological theorists to propose the concept of self-esteem. They said that self-esteem equated to the success of a person divided by their pretensions (Okoko, 2012). Students' self-esteem is usually affected during their teenage years. Physical, psychological, intellectual and social changes can be a very stressful time in a young adult's life. Due to these developmental difficulties and the demand for more adult behavior, adolescents strive to behave according to adult values, goals, and ideals (Mc Namara, 2000). According to Mc Namara (2000), it is during this period that adolescence begins to develop negative or positive perceptions of itself. Because of the importance of self-esteem, educators need to learn more about its development and its impact on academic achievement (Hamacheck, 1990). Poor self-esteem during the adolescent developmental period can lead to various risks such as juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, depression, and low academic achievement (Hamacheck, 1990).1.3 ProblemEsteem self-esteem can be crucial for students of all ages and can affect their outlook on daily life. The problem addressed in this research is therefore self-esteem and how academic performance can affect it. In addition to this, the secondary goal is for teachers and tutors to be able to see how they can learn and recognize ways in which they can foster self-esteem in their students. 1.3 Purpose Although there are positive findings that there is in fact a strong relationship between self-esteem and academic performance are those who do not take it seriously. Therefore, the object...... middle of paper...... and standards for responsible and productive behavior. .According to Figure 4.5, students believe that the way teachers teach can influence their confidence in the subject. The majority of respondents voted yes and strongly agree. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that teachers have an important role to play when it comes to the self-esteem of their students. The ability to help cultivate a student's self-esteem should be taken seriously by teachers. This research can be supported by that of Okoko, who concluded that teachers have an effect on students' self-esteem and academic performance (Okoko, 2012). Since most students believe that teachers can affect their self-esteem, it was asked what could teachers do to improve this. A large number of students indicated that they would prefer that teachers communicate with them in an appropriate manner.
