A snake appeared at the beginning of a story as a symbol of betrayal, trial, and execution. Delia has something similar to the snake. She had been so full of helplessness, of anger and she had digested everything at the end of a story, just like the snake digests its entire meal. Coming back from the "love party", Delia was filled with warm feelings. She was singing and suddenly realized that the snake was loose in the house. Within seconds, Delia finally understood the reason for the snake in the house and that Sykes had intentionally tried to take her life, but more importantly, her home, her Eden. His thoughts about Sykes had sunk to the lowest point, the woman's poor vision. When she discovered that Sykes had suffered a snake bite and was dying, she had to choose whether to help him or not. If she obeyed the rules her church imposed on her, she would undoubtedly try to prevent Sykes' death, but she decided not to.
