In order to address this problem, the Affordable Care Act was passed on March 23, 2010. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 32 million uninsured people will be insured by 2019. This will increase the volume of samples and biopsies entering pathology labs. As a result of this increased volume, many large laboratories and hospitals will see a substantial increase in revenue and therefore an increase in demand for PA. The Affordable Care Act's low reimbursement rate has forced many small labs to freeze hiring, cut salaries, or even close. Additionally, many smaller laboratories will lose business to larger laboratories, further increasing the workload. This in turn could lead to a change resulting in more PAs working in a much larger laboratory. It is the responsibility of these laboratories to evolve with the changes to ensure that sample quality and frozen section sample turnaround time are not affected.
