Each president has attempted to improve the lives of consumers by regulating the products and services provided by these large corporations. Additionally, they each supported the development of progressive income and inheritance taxes in order to fuel their activist governments and prevent the development of a business aristocracy. Eventually, liberals of the Roosevelt and Wilson types broke their feelings toward big business; Roosevelt understood the benefits and wanted to preserve them while improving their character. Wilson believed that big business was eliminating the opportunity for middle-class Americans and other businesses to enter the market, which he found completely undemocratic. Therefore, one can see how throughout the early 20th century there were varying levels of hostility and support towards big capital, culminating in the pre-Great War Republican renaissance.
