  • Essay / Let's walk to school! - 522

I think walking to school is a good way to protect the environment. This benefits our community in many ways. Although it is easier to drive to school, it is easier to save the environment by walking to school. By walking to school, we help our community in many ways. We would save a lot of money and time. If the whole community took their children to school every day; it would cost $27,000. With gas prices approaching $3 a gallon and rising, it's not a good choice to drive your kids to school unless you have to. Taking your children to school also takes time that should not be wasted. On average, parents spend about an hour a day taking their children to school. In one school year, we would lose 180 hours! An hour a day may not seem like much, but when you add it all up, it's a lot more than you would have thought. By letting your children walk to school, you benefit in several ways. If you don't want your child to walk to school alone, there are a few ways to make sure they get to school without getting in your car. You can now trust older students to make sure your son or daughter arrives at school safe and unharmed. This saves tons of gas, money and time. And it's a harmless experience for your child; it might actually benefit them! If you trust your son or daughter to walk to school alone, but you don't want them to walk to school because it takes too long, there are still options other ways for him to get to school. You can easily buy them roller skates or a bike to get to school! They are inexpensive and you can find them at Walmart™ and your child can also use it at home for exercise. You may not know this, but there are many types of alternative transportation. Copper Basin K-8 School strongly encourages alternative transportation and older students helping younger students walk to school. At school there is a program in which 7th and 8th grade students participate. It's called Vistas and it teaches us how to help our community. By accompanying the youngest students to school, we help our community. “Reduce, reuse and recycle” is what Vistas is trying to promote.
