Sociology is the study of the interactions between people and social organizations, social behavior and the origins, organization and development of human society – essentially, the study of human society (Russ). By better understanding society, we become more influential forces in its progress. Better understanding society requires several tools: a sociological eye and a sociological imagination. The eye sees “beneath the surface of society” to understand what motivates it (Korgen 1). Culture plays a role in almost every aspect of our lives. It determines values, what is important, and standards, how to achieve these values. Who sets these standards? How do we respond to those who stray? Meanwhile, imagination connects personal problems with public problems. Too often we underestimate the effect that social factors can have on our lives. For example, are college graduates struggling to stay afloat due to rising tuition costs? Recognizing that our personal lives are influenced by social factors brings us closer to solving the problems in our lives (Korgen 4)....
