Working in a team environment will bring its challenges. The main challenge to overcome is conflict within the team. Conflict will occur in a team environment, whether it is an academic learning team or a business team. How team members handle the conflict will determine whether the outcome is either a positive outcome or a negative outcome. Conflict Resolution Challenges When conflict arises in a team environment, and there is a good chance that it is the way the team handles the conflict, they result in either a positive outcome or a negative result. The conflict itself is not the problem. Rather, it is our reactions that determine the impact and thus lead us to classify it as a negative experience. Conflicts or differences can be destructive or constructive. (Porter, 2003, 1) Most of the time, conflict arises when one team member disagrees with other members. If this conflict of interest is not resolved, it can lead to distractions within the team. The team will lose focus on what needs to be accomplished. The conflict will eventually cause the team to break up and the team members will no longer be able to function as a whole. Many companies don't have a conflict resolution strategy. Without strategies, not only will team members be affected, but so will the organization. “Conflict distracts the organization from problem solving and makes it ineffective” (Huber, 2007). Often, the manager and/or team leader does not have conflict resolution skills. This leads to many challenges for the team as a whole.
