Essay / Hamlet, by William Shakespeare - 990
When is the appropriate time to grieve for a lost loved one? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, mourned the death of her husband for less than two months. She then decides to marry King Hamlet's brother, Claude. Hamlet's mother's new marriage is what bothers him the most. Hamlet believes that Claudius will never live up to the legacy his father left as king of Denmark. The social context that is revealed to the reader through Hamlet's monologue describes three character traits that he possesses: suicidal thoughts, concern for the well-being of his country, confusion towards the ghost of his father and whether is or is not in the country's interest for him. to take revenge. It also shows how Queen Gertrude's hasty nuptials, after not having a proper moment of mourning, goes against the society of that time. Additionally, this foreshadows the great effect this will have on Hamlet. One of the character traits that Hamlet possessed was suicidal thoughts. Hamlet's sheer hatred for his mother's new marriage and fear of being called a traitor if he confesses to anyone is enough to make anyone feel confused and doubt themselves. Hamlet feels helpless and is the only one grieving the recent death of his father. “Come on, come on!” Ah fi! Ti is a weed-free garden/that grows to produce seeds; things of noble and gross nature/simply possess it” (I.ii.135-137). life is a garden without weeds that gives birth to seeds. Life is a waste of time, which is why Hamlet has suicidal tendencies. The garden is unnatural in the state of Denmark, with the assassination of a king. Rank and gross refer to Claudius. Rank means having enormous hatred or disgust. Claude's manners and morals were crude and noble. Hamlet explains...... middle of paper ...... his father's ghost, and whether or not he should take revenge. Hamlet is still unsure whether the ghost is real or a hallucination on his part. This also adds suspicion about Claudius' true motives in marrying Gertrude and his concern for his country, Denmark. Shakespeare chooses to let the character of Hamlet possess these certain characteristics so early on so that he sets the stage for the rest of the play. I predict that Hamlet will become so delusional and crazy; he will listen to what the ghost tells him. He only wants the best for his country, but he is about to go to war with Norway under the leadership of a king who in Hamlet's eyes is not worthy. I believe there will be a power struggle between Hamlet and Claudius for the throne and for Hamlet to claim what is rightfully his. Works Cited Shakespeare, William. Hamlet.
