    The dictionary definition of satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices. Particularly, in the context of contemporary politics or other current issues. If one were to examine contemporary culture today, one would notice that it is increasingly satirized. One could argue this by opening any program and listening for hidden messages alluding to a cause or political reference. Satire appears in many forms and can be used to shock the reader or target into changing their behavior. For example, in Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal, he highlighted the poor living conditions in Ireland. He also spoke about the poor approach of the English and Irish to the situation. Swift then mocked them by suggesting people sell and eat their children to remedy the situation. A solution that would have been beneficial to both parties. Swift had many satirical pieces similar to A Modest Proposal, but none are as well known as his classic 1726 tale, Gulliver's Travels. In Swift expressed his opinions by describing the vices of society through a man named Lemuel Gulliver. Gulliver, the main character, is often considered the first mockery shown in the book. Specifically because Gulliver looks and sounds gullible. Swift began her satirical novel using this name to show that humans are very gullible. For proof, we could look at the original audience for this book. Swift's targets didn't know he was mocking them; they thought he had just written a children's book, which is why the name, Gulliver, suits him perfectly.
