The Future of Policing The future of policing is pretty clear in which direction it is heading. The country has slowly reformed to meet the needs of the population, reduce crime and make the police more effective. Some of the reforms that will likely take place in the future include better trained police officers and police directors, consolidation of police departments to save money and resources, improved technology, racial and gender equality, better testing techniques for recruiting and promoting within the department and improved proactive planning techniques. One such proactive tool that will surely be more widely used and better implemented is community policing. It has evolved since its first introduction into the policing world and will see further reforms in the future. Compstat is also expected to be more widely used by almost all police departments to increase accountability and improve crime mapping. Current economic and political trends will affect the manner and relevance of certain reforms. Certain trends, such as increasing costs of medical services, will affect officers' salaries and benefits, while the development of inexpensive technology with instant communication via cell phones and personal computers will improve response time and distribution of information quickly and efficiently. Demographic changes, with the increasing cultural and ethical diversity of the population, will create more needs for career equality. This trend will also be favored by the immigration of more educated professionals from third world countries. The increase in multinational organized crime activities will create an increased need for better communication between countries and joint efforts to stop them. Growing concerns about crimes committed by violent juveniles and individuals armed with modern weapons, terrorism, and threats to our infrastructure will also shape how police reforms respond to these increased threats. Due to the greater concern over terrorism, more resources will be allocated to internal security. These are resources which could have helped domestic crime and police management and which will have to be compensated. Even smart credit cards, DNA identification, and global positioning systems will all help shape the new model of policing. This organization would be a lot like the United Nations, but instead of politics and a military, it would be a global police force that could actually go in, arrest individuals, and bring them to justice before the world.
